Asia’s Largest Airport, Noida International Airport, Set for October Inauguration

Sep 19, 2025

A major milestone in India’s aviation sector is on the horizon as the Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport, is set for inauguration next month. The new airport, poised to become Asia’s largest upon full completion, is a landmark infrastructure project that promises to transform air travel and economic development in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Western Uttar Pradesh. The long-awaited airport’s inauguration marks the beginning of a new era of enhanced connectivity and is a testament to India’s growing ambition in the global aviation landscape.

A New Hub for Air Travel: Inauguration and Operations

Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu has officially announced that the Noida International Airport will be inaugurated on October 30. While the grand inauguration will take place next month, passenger and commercial flight operations are expected to commence within 45 days of the launch. This strategic timeline aims to ensure a smooth and safe transition to full operational capacity.

The airport will initially connect around 10 major Indian cities, primarily metros, in its first phase. Airlines like IndiGo and Akasa Air have already signed agreements to operate from the new hub. Key cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata are among the first destinations to be linked, providing travelers with a convenient alternative to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi.

Project Progress and Operational Readiness

The journey to this significant moment has involved meticulous planning and execution. The airport concessionaire, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, has been working on the project for several years. Despite facing multiple delays from the initial September 2024 deadline, the project has now reached an advanced stage of completion.

A significant hurdle was cleared when the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) granted airside security clearance on September 15. This was a critical prerequisite for obtaining the aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the final approval needed for commercial operations. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is actively installing and commissioning essential equipment in the new air traffic control (ATC) tower.

To ensure a seamless launch, a comprehensive Operational Readiness Activation and Transition (ORAT) program is in full swing. This program includes extensive trial runs, system simulations, and staff training for airlines, ground handlers, and security personnel. All critical systems, including baggage handling, check-in counters, and security scanners, are undergoing rigorous testing to guarantee a smooth experience for passengers from day one.

Designed for the Future: Capacity and Expansion

The Noida International Airport, or Jewar Airport, is being developed in a phased manner to meet the growing demands of the aviation sector.

  • Phase 1: The first phase will feature a single runway and one terminal, with an annual passenger capacity of 12 million. It is projected that the airport will serve around six million passengers in its inaugural year.
  • Future Phases: The capacity will be scaled up significantly in subsequent phases. Phase 2 aims to increase capacity to 30 million passengers per annum (MPPA), followed by 50 MPPA in Phase 3, and a final, long-term capacity of 70 MPPA. The ultimate vision is a six-runway airport, mirroring the gradual growth model of the IGI Airport in Delhi.

The airport is also being designed with advanced technology and infrastructure. It will feature CAT-III certified runways, which are crucial for enabling safe aircraft operations even during the dense fog that affects Northern India in winter. This feature will help in minimizing flight disruptions and enhancing passenger convenience.

Economic and Strategic Importance

The Noida International Airport is more than just a new travel hub; it is a catalyst for economic growth and regional development. Its strategic location along the Yamuna Expressway and proximity to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Dedicated Freight Corridor positions it as a major logistics and cargo gateway for Northern India. This focus on cargo operations will be a key driver of economic activity, integrating local industries into global value chains.

The airport is expected to spur a massive boom in real estate and infrastructure development in the surrounding areas of Noida, Greater Noida, and Jewar. Land prices have already seen a significant appreciation, and this trend is projected to continue as the region transforms into a major commercial and industrial hub. The project is also part of a larger government initiative to develop a new “aerotropolis” or airport city, complete with industrial and commercial zones, hotels, and entertainment facilities.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Noida International Airport next month marks a pivotal moment for India’s aviation sector. As the country’s newest and most modern airport, it is set to alleviate congestion at IGI Airport, boost regional connectivity, and serve as a powerful engine for economic growth. With its state-of-the-art facilities, focus on both passenger and cargo operations, and ambitious expansion plans, the Noida International Airport is well on its way to becoming a crucial aviation hub not just for India, but for all of Asia. read more latest news on Daily Edge News.
